A master's in financial engineering (MFE) is one of the more direct routes into quantitative finance. The degree, sometimes called quantitative finance, mathematical finance, or computational finance, trains you in stochastic calculus, statistics, machine learning, and programming for roles in quant research, trading, risk, and structuring.

The US has the deepest concentration of these programs in the world. Choosing among them is hard because the names differ, the cost gap is large, and outcomes vary a lot. This guide draws on the 2026 US ranking data, which compares 26 programs on peer assessment, placement, salary, selectivity, and tuition.

What stands out this year

Baruch is first, and it isn't close. It posts a perfect score, 100% employment at graduation and at three months, the highest reported base salary at nearly $179,000, and tuition of about $45,000, far below its peers at the top. The catch is access: A 4.0% acceptance rate and a cohort of only about 20 full-time students. It is the best value in the ranking and also the hardest program to get into.

The Ivy-tier programs sell prestige at a premium. Princeton and MIT charge roughly $130,000 in tuition, and their salaries ($160,217 and $140,140) are strong but not proportionally higher than programs costing a third less. Berkeley stands out here: it reports the third-highest salary ($154,383) at a tuition of $87,046, and it is one of the few programs with a spring start.

Carnegie Mellon is the scale play. It has the largest ranked cohort in the top five, 108 full-time students, and a 16-month curriculum blending computer science, statistics, math, and business. Its 100% employment at three months is impressive, though its 72% at graduation is lower than several rivals, so many graduates land jobs after commencement.

The mid-tier offers the best return on cost. Georgia Tech ($66,132 tuition, 94% employed at graduation) and NC State ($66,048, 100% employed at three months) deliver solid outcomes at roughly half the price of the elite tier. The University of Washington is the cheapest ranked program among the larger schools at $52,116, with an 89% three-month placement rate.

New York programs show wide variance. Columbia's MFE, NYU Courant, NYU Tandon, Cornell, and Fordham sit close to Wall Street, but their placement numbers differ sharply. NYU Courant reports 26% employed at graduation and 63% at three months, while Columbia's MFE reports 79% and 87%. Proximity to the industry helps networking, but it doesn't guarantee outcomes.

Reading the metrics wisely

  • Employment at three months matters more than at graduation. Recruiting timelines and reporting practices vary, so the three-month figure is usually the more comparable number.

  • Yield rate hints at student preference. Baruch (90.9%), Columbia's MFE (83.4%), NC State (81.0%), and Princeton (80.0%) keep most of the students they admit. A low yield, like Johns Hopkins at 9.5%, suggests many admits choose elsewhere.

  • Acceptance rate is not a quality measure on its own. Programs with acceptance rates above 60% can still place graduates well, but the strongest cohorts tend to form where admission is competitive.

  • Base salary is not total compensation. Quant roles often carry large bonuses that the base salary figure doesn't capture.

What the programs look for

Requirements vary, but the common profile is a strong quantitative undergraduate background: calculus, linear algebra, probability, and statistics, plus real programming ability, typically Python and C++. Some programs require or recommend the GRE or GMAT, while others don't, so check each admissions page. Prior finance knowledge helps but is rarely mandatory. Work experience, internships, research, and competition results can offset a thinner academic record.

Timing matters. The 2027 application cycle is already underway, and many programs review applications in rounds, so applying early tends to help.

International students

The MFE is popular with international applicants. Many programs carry a STEM designation, which can extend post-graduation work authorization, but this varies by program and immigration rules change, so confirm the current details with each school's international office before you commit.

How to choose

Start with your goal, then match it to the program:

  • Highest ceiling, and you can get in: Baruch, Princeton, MIT, Berkeley, Carnegie Mellon.

  • Best value for money: Baruch, Georgia Tech, NC State, University of Washington, Stony Brook.

  • Proximity to New York recruiting: Baruch, Columbia, NYU, Fordham, Stevens, Rutgers.

  • Heavier computer science and programming: Carnegie Mellon, Georgia Tech, Berkeley.

  • Flexible formats: Chicago offers part-time and online options, and Berkeley has a spring start.

Before you apply, look up each shortlisted program's own placement report, since firms and roles matter as much as averages. Read student reviews, and ask current students how recruiting actually works.
